Peninsula Profile
QCPCA Peninsula Region covers an area from Cardwell in the south, west to Croydon in the Gulf and north to Saibai Island, 3 kms from the coast of Papua New Guinea. We have 122 government schools including 17 island schools and 3 environment education centres. In this very diverse region incorporating the 3 Education Qld districts of Cairns and Cape, Tablelands/Johnstone and the Torres Straits, there are 33,000 students of which 3,000 are pre-schoolers, 19,000 primary students, 11,000 secondary students and 10,000 of Aboriginal or Islander descent.
With representation on the two innovative groups 'Far Northern Strategic Advisory Group' and the 'Far Northern Strategic Advisory Group for Students with a Disability' in our region, we feel confident our region has a positive and proactive voice for our state school parents and students. The Peninsula Region Council has 4 weekend meetings per year, including one family weekend at Tinaroo Dam Environment Centre. This weekend allows member's families to put faces to names. The weekend has proved to be successful, with time out of meeting procedures for key note speakers to address those attending on relevant and current educational issues.
Because of the massive area we cover and the expertise achieved by members, we now have the ability to have representatives present at local P&C’s to address concerns and issues if required, the most being: Tuckshop, Outside School Hours Care, and the roles of the executive and sub-committees. These issues will constantly be our challenge.
Our vision for our region is that we achieve successful P&C meeting procedures and the empowering of P&C’s and Principals to be aware of our concerns and their consideration of where we want to go for the best outcomes for our State School Students.
