July 2008 Update
From the President's desk: Many schools rely on regular fundraising activities and grants to raise vital money to purchase resources and equipment that enhance the children’s education or facilities that may otherwise be unaffordable. In the past, a number of these fundraising activities have revolved around the promotion of foods with little or no nutritional value and some schools continue to do this. As long as it conforms to the Smart Choices guidelines there is nothing wrong with this, but the preference would be to investigate healthier alternatives which is also supported by the Dietitians’ Association of Australia. Many schools, often by convenience, fall into the rut of repeating fundraising activities from year to year. Like many activities, the aim of successful fundraising is to achieve the maximum return for minimum effort and/or outlay.

The Northern Regional Profile
The Northern Region extends from Gumlu State School on the coast, south east of Home Hill, and Millaroo State School, inland from Gumlu. West to Greenvale and Pentland State Schools and north to Abergowrie State School. To simplify that, we extend from North of Ingham, to South of Home Hill and West of Charters Towers.
The Northern Region includes Kirwan High School with one of the largest student populations in the state, with 1988 students. Helens Hills State School is currently the smallest school with an enrolment of 9. There are 39 Band 5 schools, 13 Band 6, 9 Band 7, 12 Band 8, 15 Band 9, 6 Band 10 and 2 Band 11 in Pimlico and Kirwan State High Schools. Five schools have a student population in excess of 1000, while 14 have between 100 and 300 students and 51 have 100 students or less.
We have an enthusiastic and dedicated team led by Regional President Mick Cutler, Vice President Leonie Harch, Secretary Kim Donaldson, Treasurer Michelle Musumeci and State Executive representative Bill Curtis. Most of our executive officers are new to their role this year. They, along with our other school delegates, are great advocates for Public Education and QCPCA.
Bill Curtis is our newly elected State Executive representative to QCPCA State Council taking over from Wally Thomasson who is retiring from QCPCA duties. After working around Far East Asia, he returned to Townsville at the end of last year with his wife and four children; all of whom were born in Sarawak. With a son in Year Two and daughter in Prep. at Belgian Gardens State School he has an interest in education for many years to come. His 3 year old daughter and 1 year old son will follow in due course.
Kim Donaldson is our new Regional Secretary. She and her husband live on Camel Creek Station, a cattle property 100km south-west of Ingham and 200km north-west of Charters Towers. She home tutors her 3 children through the Charters Towers School of Distance Education. Their youngest daughter will be starting Prep next year.
Michelle Musumeci has taken over the reigns of Regional Treasurer from Jo-Ann Gillis our past Treasurer. With her husband they operate a family earthmoving business for which she does the books and accounts. They have 2 children who attend Home Hill State Primary in Year 2 and Prep respectively.
Michelle is currently the President for the P & C at Home Hill Primary and that is where she became involved with the QCPCA. She also works three days a week as an Admin/Bookkeeper. She is looking forward to an exciting year in which she can learn and grow.
Leonie Harch is the newly elected Northern Regional Council Vice-President. Married to a surveyor they have two children 8 and 6 years. Both children attend East Ayr State School where she is the P&C's QCPCA Representative. Leonie is currently employed as a Teachers-aide at Ayr State School and previous to that, was self- employed as a child care provider for thirteen years.
Further to the above, it would be remiss not to mention the continuing support by two of our Regional life members, Lyn Phillips and Errol Neale. Both of them have chalked up many years of experience and have accepted regional, state and national positions during that time. In their willingness to share their knowledge, they are wonderful mentors and a ready source of assistance with a wealth of knowledge and experience, for the new committee.
The team is composed of very skilled and busy people who are passionately working in furtherance of educational outcomes for our schools and tirelessly working to improve the outcomes of students within our P&C's as well as within our Regional Council. As with the diversity of schools in our region, our combined skills are many and varied and we welcome the challenges of the year ahead.
