Wide Bay Regional Profile
There are 141 schools in the Wide Bay Regional area. These range from one-teacher schools in isolated areas to large and expanding city schools on the coast. The region has schools in 3 of the new Education Queensland Regions. The majority are in North Coast Region, however several schools are in Central Queensland Region and Darling Downs-South West Region.
Extending from Agnes Waters and Monto in the north to Gympie, Blackbutt and Yarraman in the south and west to Durong South; the Wide Bay Region covers about 56000 square kilometers.
For this reason, regional conferences, meetings and workshops are held at a variety of sites to enable interested delegates to attend. With a trip time of about 3 hours from one side of the region to the other, it is at times difficult to coordinate and attract delegates to such meetings.
Twenty-four schools have special education units and staff from these units also service a cluster of schools when the need arises. There are 4 Special Schools in the region.
In response to the recognised needs of their students, school communities have introduced award-winning instrumental music, dance, technology, work readiness, marine and agricultural programs. The co-operation between school, P&C and community is invaluable in achieving the most beneficial results for students.
Wide Bay Regional Council endeavours to best meet the needs of its P & Cs by forming a management committee of 12 members, drawn from across the region. Due to distance, time and financial constraints, their main networking is via email and phone. However, the management committee meets every 2 months and invites all P&Cs to send delegates to a conference in March and July. Other workshops and visits to P&Cs are organised on request or to meet identified needs as they arise.
