The Northern Region Profile
The Northern Region extends from Gumlu State School to the south of Home Hill, west to Greenvale and Pentland State Schools and north to Abergowrie State School. To simplify that, we extend from North of Ingham, to South of Home Hill and West of Charters Towers.
The Northern Region demographic, encompassing 75 facilities, includes Kirwan High School with one of the largest student populations in the state, with 1958 students to Mt Fox State School which is currently the smallest school with an enrolment of nine (9) students. There are 22xBand 5 schools, 9 x Band 6, 9 x Band 7, 13 x Band 8, 14 x Band 9, 6 x Band 10 and 2 x Band 11 schools in the region. Four (4) schools have a student population in excess of 1000 students, seventeen (17) have between 500 and 1000 students, twenty-three (23) between 100 and 500 students and thirty-one (31) have 100 students or less.
The NRC Executive
We have an enthusiastic and dedicated volunteer team led by Regional President, Bill Curtis, Vice Presidents Leonie Harch and Mick Cutler who is also the regional State Executive Representative, Secretary Kim Donaldson and Treasurer Linda Nardini. They, along with our other school delegates, are great advocates for Public Education and QCPCA.
Bill Curtis and his wife have four children, two of whom attend Belgian Gardens State School. Another will start Prep next year and the fourth two years later. He joined the school's P&C in 2007 becoming their QCPCA representative and subsequently, albeit briefly, the State Executive Representative for the Northern Region Council. He now replaces Mick Cutler who stepped aside after three years as president.
Mick Cutler has been involved in P&C and QCPCA activities since his eldest son began school in 2003. Since that time, he has served as Secretary, President and QCPCA representative at his sons' school, as well as relief OSHC Co-ordinator for a lengthy period. With his long association with the P&C and as a self-employed business owner, he is aware of the financial accountabilities that P&Cs must comply with. His children, in 2009, are in Years 1, 4 and 7 and his wife works at the school as a Teacher's aide.
Leonie Harch is married to a surveyor and they have two children who in 2009 will be in Years 3 and 5. At her children's school she is the P&C's QCPCA Representative and is currently employed as a Co-ordinator at a child care centre in the Burdekin district. Prior to her current employment, Leonie was a teacher's aide at various Burdekin schools and also was a self-employed child care provider for thirteen years.
Linda Nardini is married to a Defence Forces nursing officer and has two children with the elder in Year 2 in 2009 and the younger yet to commence schooling. As an early childhood teacher she has a particular interest in Prep and the Early Years curriculum and is a wealth of knowledge and guidance to the region in these expertise areas. Linda is an active member of her child's school's P&C as their President and QCPCA representative and is an activist for positive educational outcomes.
Kim Donaldson lives with her husband and children on Camel Creek Station, a cattle property 100km south-west of Ingham and 200km north-west of Charters Towers. She home tutors her 3 children through the Charters Towers School of Distance Education. Their children are in Years 1, 5 and 7 in 2009.
In addition to the regional office bearers, it would be remiss not to mention the enduring support of Lyn Phillips, a QCPCA regional and State Life Member who has chalked up many years of experience and who has accepted numerous regional, state and national positions during that time. She has proven to be a wonderful mentor, a ready source of assistance with a wealth of knowledge and experience and keeps the regional office bearers 'on their toes'.
