Darling Downs Profile
The Darling Downs Region covers an area that extends from the Lockyer Valley in the east, the northern Downs in the north, the Granite belt in the south-east and the south-western Downs in the south-west. Thus, the Region abuts the New South Wales border to the west of the Great Dividing Range. Schools at Gatton in the east, Crow's Nest in the north-east, Jimbour in the north-west, Wallangarra in the south-east and Talwood in the south-west define the Region. The Region encompasses schools in the Toowoomba and Warwick School Districts and in the eastern part of The Downs District.
There are 114 schools in the Region. Student numbers range from 6 to 1902 with 62 schools having fewer than 100 students, 35 between 100 and 500 students and 19 with over 500 students. 11 of the schools are High Schools and 9 are P-10 schools. About one half of the schools in the Region are still facing level 5 water restrictions and the related difficulties with relations to grounds upkeep and curriculum delivery.
The Regional Executive Director, also responsible for schools in the South West Region, regularly attends and speaks at our Regional Conferences, as do the two Community Participation Officers in the Region. The Executive meets with the RED at least once per term to discuss local issues.
We will hold at least two parent conferences in 2009-10 and five Regional meetings spread between the three school Districts during the year. Management Committee meetings will be held between Regional meetings to discuss topical issues, organise the day to day running of the Region, and provide Regional views for our State Executive Representative to take to State Executive Meetings.
P&Cs in the Region are encouraged to contact the Regional team to discuss local or regional issues; and to join them at the Regional meetings held throughout the year.
