The Darling Downs Region covers an area that extends from the Lockyer Valley in the east, the northern Downs in the north, the Granite belt in the south-east and the south-western Downs in the south-west. Thus, the Region abuts the New South Wales border to the west of the Great Dividing Range. Schools at Gatton in the east, Crow's Nest in the north-east, Jimbour in the north-west, Wallangarra in the south-east and Talwood in the south-west define the Region. The Region encompasses schools in the previously specified Education Queensland Districts of Toowoomba, Warwick and the eastern part of The Downs District. All schools in the Darling Downs Regional Council are part of the Darling Downs South West Region of Education Queensland.
There are 113 schools in the Region. Student numbers range from 10 to 1902 with 61 schools having fewer than 100 students, 35 between 100 and 500 students and 19 with over 500 students. 11 of the schools are High Schools and 9 are P-10 schools. Water shortages and water restrictions are still affecting about one half of the schools in the Region creating difficulties with grounds upkeep and aspects of curriculum delivery.
The Regional Director, also responsible for schools in the South West Region, is invited to speak at our Regional Conferences, as do other Education Queensland personnel including EDSIs (Executive Director, School Improvement) and our two Community Participation Officers in the Region. The Executive organise a meeting with the RD once per term to discuss local issues.
We plan to hold at least two parent conferences in 2009-10 and a number of Regional meetings spread across the Region during the year. Management Committee meetings will be held between Regional meetings to discuss topical issues, organise the day to day running of the Region, and provide Regional views for our State Executive Representative to take to State Executive Meetings.
P&Cs in the Region are encouraged to contact the Regional team to discuss local or regional issues; and to join them at the Regional meetings held throughout the year.
