‘Seize’ World Teachers’ Day - 29 October 2004
Queensland school communities are being urged to ‘seize’ World Teachers’ Day as an opportunity to say thanks to their teachers.
Board of Teacher Registration Director, Graeme Hall, said World Teachers’ Day (Friday, October 29) offered a chance for parents, students and others to acknowledge and support teachers’ work.
“There’s a lot of good will towards the teaching profession in our community, yet teaching’s many successes are infrequently celebrated,” he said.
“Every day, across the State, teachers are helping students to advance and achieve. In a job that requires a true vocational calling, a simple thank you can mean so much.”
Mr Hall said the role of teachers was becoming increasingly complex due to rapid changes in society, technology, education theory and administration.
The profession was meeting the challenge through teacher education, continuing professional development and teacher-led innovation in teaching practice.
More than 89,000 teachers are registered in Queensland. The Board administers Queensland’s system of compulsory teacher registration and approves higher education programs for the purpose of registration.
UNESCO inaugurated World Teachers’ Day in 1994 to focus attention on the contributions and achievements of teachers, and on their concerns and priorities.
