I hope that you all had a lovely Easter break to rest and recharge the batteries for a busy Term 2. The federal and state agendas continue at pace and QCPCA is working to ensure that P&Cs stay fully informed and represented at all levels. Following a cabinet reshuffle, we have a new Minister for Education and Industrial Relations, the Hon. Cameron Dick, Member for Greenslopes. I would firstly like to thank Minister Geoff Wilson, who worked tirelessly to ensure that the education agenda was effective and forward-looking. We wish Minister Wilson all the best in his new role as Minister for Health. I am pleased to report that Minister Dick called me the very next day to introduce himself and to underline the continuing importance placed by the government on the relationship with QCPCA. We are lucky to have such a committed advocate for education in the role and look forward to working closely with the Minister.
By now you will have held your AGMs and your P&C will be working closely with the school to ensure the best interests of your children are upheld. If you haven't done so already, your P&C will need to adopt the new P&C constitution. This was released early in the year after advocacy from QCPCA and as a result of close consultation with the Department of Education. For further information please visit the QCPCA website.
You will also have received your annual mailout which includes a range of papers essential for the running of your P&C. Please do not forget to complete the 'Executive details' form as it helps QCPCA to ensure contact is maintained with the correct people. If you haven't already done so, please ensure that your membership and insurance renewal is paid. Equally as important, your P&C will need to give their Secretary and President's email addresses to the school's MIS administrator/principal to ensure that correspondence is directed from the generic P&C email address ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. What's coming up?
P&C Day is fast approaching. Schools across Queensland are encouraged to celebrate, on Friday 27 May, the contribution of parents and citizens' associations to state school communities. What a fantastic opportunity to showcase all the great things we do to the wider community. For further information please visit the QCPCA and Department of Education websites. We look forward to hearing how P&Cs celebrated this day.
Agreement on the Australian Curriculum P-10 in English, Mathematics, Science and History was reached by Australia's Education Ministers at the end of 2010. The Australian Curriculum will mean consistency for students and teachers who move interstate and provide the opportunity to develop a world-class education.
The Prep to Year 10 curriculum has been published by ACARA online and Year 11 to Year 12 curriculum will be finalised mid next year. The QSA and Queensland's school sectors have agreed on a staged approach to the implementation of the P-10 Australian Curriculum.
Early childhood reform in the form of the National Quality Framework (NQF) includes a National Quality Standard (NQS) which all services will be assessed against from 1 January 2012. This will have an impact on P&Cs that run OSHC facilities. Further information can be found on the QCPCA and Department of Education websites.
Please continue to use the QCPCA website, QCPCA-e and Parent Talk to stay up-to-date. In this edition, we feature articles from communities affected by the recent floods and cyclone along with post-AGM advice and the usual items including news for P&Cs to be aware of.
Kind regards,
Margaret Leary
QCPCA State President
