Welcome back. As expected, this year has started at full speed and there is a proliferation of new policies and policy reviews on the table at the moment. QCPCA is proud to represent P&Cs across Queensland and we ensure that P&Cs are listened to.
We would like to applaud the fact that education is still clearly a government priority. The green paper, A Flying Start for Queensland Children, is a good example of how the government has opened dialogue on schooling and we would certainly encourage you to attend the community forums that are currently taking place across Queensland or provide online feedback.
Since my last message ...
I have been involved in countless interviews with both statewide and national media. The big issues have ranged from curriculum to student welfare and it is pleasing to see that QCPCA is regarded as one of the first ports of call for comment.
QCPCA has successfully held a New Year function, a Regional Skilling weekend and two State Executive meetings since my last message. Further information on these events can be found on our website in the new "State Executive Meetings" section located on the home page (www.qcpca.org.au).
We also continue to meet on a regular basis with key interlocutors in education, ensuring that the messages from P&Cs are sent and received.
QCPCA into Term 2 - What are the key issues?
- A Flying Start for Queensland Children - Green Paper
As mentioned above, the government is conducting community meetings to discuss the issues raised in the paper. We encourage you to read the paper and complete the online survey. QCPCA have requested feedback via Regional Councils, so if you have any points that you wish to raise via QCPCA, please contact your regional representatives (details available on the QCPCA website).
- AGMs
This is an important time of year, as many P&Cs will have elected new Executive members. Please ensure that, where possible, you conduct handovers. This will allow P&C business to continue as normal and in the long run will also save time. Congratulations to all those who have joined their P&C.
- Queensland Schools Alliance Against Violence
QCPCA were asked to provide a representative on the Alliance following its formation at the end of February. The group is making progress and I am sure that we will see some positive outcomes.
- Teaching and Learning Audits
Some schools will already have experienced the Teaching and Learning Audits that are taking place in 2010. QCPCA has been working as part of the consultative committee and are pleased to say that P&C Presidents are to be included in the process.
- National curriculum
ACARA have now released the draft P-10 Australian Curriculum in four learning areas: English, mathematics, science and history, for consultation. Feedback can be provided on the ACARA website but if you would like to provide feedback via QCPCA, please forward it to us by email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
Finally I would also like to update you as to the progress of the QCPCA organisational review. We have now taken the key recommendations from the review and are working to ensure that they are debated and, where necessary, put into action. The QCPCA State Executive have appointed working groups to consider these issues and have asked Regional Councils to nominate representatives.
Kind regards,
Margaret Black
State President
